November Totals

November was a busy month for Kids Against Hunger.  We had 299 volunteers come in and package 59,800 meals.  These meals are being distributed to local groups,  as well as,  to the people of Haiti.  We are currently providing meals to Faith Mission Friday Night Food Give-Away, The Food to You Program, and Neighborhood Necessities.  All of these programs serve the people of Sioux Falls and the surrounding area.

On Sunday December 13th, we will be packing a school bus that was donated by School Bus Inc. to Mission Haiti with 50,000 meals that will feed children in Ti'Rivere Haiti.  Mission-Haiti has  two schools as well as an orphanage and medical clinic.  These meals will be given to not only school children but to pregnant women and breast feeding moms.

This is the first month that Kids Against HungerSioux Falls is able to provide over 15,000 meals that will be used in the Backpack Progran in our elementary and middle schools.  This will be the first time a meal intended to be shared with the whole family, has been included in the backpacks.

December will be a busy month too.  Many families will be getting together for a packing.  This is, many times, instead of exchanging family presents.  Please consider making this a tradition in your family.

WOW October Totals 34,280 Meals

October was a busy and exciting month for Kids Against Hunger Sioux Falls.  We held only five packing sessions but still packed over 34,000 meals.  The University of Sioux Falls came in and packed 15,000 in less than two hours!  It was exciting to see how hard they worked and what beautiful artwork was done on the boxes we will send to Haiti later this month.  Even better news is that they will return again this month to do it all over again.

Many people ask how they can get involved.  I guess the best way to get involved is to stop by sometime and see what we are doing.  Maybe you'd like to become a "Leader of the Pack".  It means greeting joining with 2 or 3 other leaders and greeting, instructing, supervising, preparing a sample of our food, cleaning up and then saying good bye to new friends.  It involves about 2 to 3 hours of your time.

We will be supplying meals to Faith Temple in Sioux Falls. They have a Friday Night Food Give Away.  People who have packed the meals at our packing center will pass out the meals to nearly 400 families that show up.  We have many families here in Sioux Falls that will benefit from our Kids Against Hunger meals.  We will continure to honor requests for our food wherever they come from.

Look at our "Get Involved" page to see the schedule for November.  Then drop by and see what's happening.  You might even be put to work.

SALSA NEEDS YOUR HELP!

What is SALSA?
In 1999, the HELP!Line Center developed SALSA, the Serve & Learn Student Association, as a way to connect youth with opportunities to serve. It also allows teens to create and carry out meaningful service projects that meet community needs and inspire youth to get involved.  There is a group of students that really want to work on a hunger project.  They number about 75.  The guidelines of the organization don't allow fundraising.  This is done so everyone has an equal opportunity to participate.  Jennifer Abels at  Helpline has been looking for sponsors to help out the students in SALSA.  If you would like to help her make this project a reality, send her an e-mail at Salsa@helplinecenter.org.

We at Kids Against Hunger need their help. We have a goal  of 50,000 meals to be packed on a bus destined for Haiti.   If you would like to help, let Jennifer Abels know today

HOUSTON....WE HAVE A PROBLEM

Tom Hanks did a better job in Apollo 13, but we do have a problem.  We have a bit of a deadline!  Someone gave a perfectly good school bus to one of the missions we support in Haiti.  We'd like to fill the bus with 50,000 meals for the kids at the local school.  We need your help.  We need 7 or 8 groups of people to collect a little money to help cover the cost of the meals and then, come in and help pack them.  The bus will leave about the 10th of November for Miami where it will put on a ship for transport to Haiti.  Remember it takes about 15 people to run each line and we can do two lines at once.  Won't you help?  Get your friends together and contact us at info@kidsagainsthungersiouxfalls.org

We're off to a great start!!

Just think, only three weeks ago we started packaging food  for Kids Against Hunger Sioux Falls.  On Saturday September 12th, we finished a two hour packing of 7,128 meals!  That brings the total meal count to over 22,000 meals.
Three pallets will leave shortly for the Haitian Health Foundation in Jeramie, Haiti.  The over 21,000 meals will arrive in Haiti in the middle of October.   The remaining 1,000 meals will be taken to the Food Pantry here in Sioux Falls and will be used to feed the hungry here at home.  Additional meals will be offered to the Salvation Army for distribution, as well as, the Back Pack Program, The Mobile Food Pantry and The Banquet.  It could not have been possible without your help and hard work.

We are now looking for more groups to come in for packing. In a short time, a used school bus will be filled with 10,000 pounds of our meals to be transported to Miami, Florida.  The food-filled bus will be sent to Port au Prince, Haiti filled with food for the children in the two schools at 'Ti Rivere.  The schools are run by Pam and Mike Plaiser of Tea, SD.  If you'd like to learn more about the ministry of this local couple, go to www.mission-haiti.org.

The small village of Jamel, Haiti is located in the mountains of northern Haiti.  This school was started by dedicated people in southeastern South Dakota and need our meals to help the children survive.  The people from Helping Hands for Haiti are waiting for our meals.  By shipping them Kids Against Hunger meals, it allows them to use money they have been spending on food to be used for other things in their schools.  Learn more about them at www.helpinghandsforhaiti.com

We are looking for groups to come in continue our mission.  We suggest a $30 minimum donation per packer to help us cover some of the costs of the food.  Remember it takes about 15 people to staff one line.  Write us at info@kidsagainsthungersiouxfalls.org to arrange a time.  We have two really exciting projects in the works that could mean lots of works for the who want to pack but are unable to contribute financially.
